Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, arched tab handles, and squared rim, brush-decorated on the front with a large flowering plant bearing Germanic and other tulips. A total of seven flowers are depicted. Reverse decorated with a large sunflower flanked by foliate devices. Among the finest Milburn stoneware jars that we have ever offered, set apart by its powerful two-sided decoration and brilliant color. This example was likely decorated by potter, James Shinnick, who took elements of its designs to Strasburg and Mt. Crawford, Virginia. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor, U-shaped line to interior of rim and a minor in-the-making chip at base on front. H 12 7/8”.
