Extremely Rare Stoneware Blacksmith's Harvest Jug, Inscribed "Pony Mott / Peninsula, Ohio," Summit County, OH origin, circa 1885, domed form with applied wide and narrow pouring spouts, the handle fashioned in the form of a raised twig with applied knots and incised and cobalt-highlighted bark. Front incised with a cobalt-highlighted design of a banner bearing the name, "Pony Mott," above a arm-and-hammer motif flanked by the town name, "Peninsula OHiO." Faint initials incised in the underside may refer to the potter. The 1880 federal census lists a blacksmith named Orson J. Mott living in Peninsula, Summit County, Ohio. "Pony" was presumably his nickname, derived from the making of horseshoes. A wonderful presentation object celebrating another prominent American handicraft of the time period. Loss to one end of handle. Salt drips to shoulder/front. Two chips to larger opening. H 11".
