Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with brushed design of a man's face with long nose and prominent chin surrounded by a crescent-shaped foliate motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Superb color and condition with desirable size and form to the jar. Evan R. Jones man-in-the-moon motifs are significantly rarer than those by Cowden & Wilcox. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minuscule nick to one handle, two unglazed, in-the-firing contact marks, and some typical staining to interior. H 8 1/4".
