Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Gamecock Decoration, Stamped "JULIUS NORTON / BENNINGTON. VT," circa 1841-1844, ovoid jar with tall collar and applied lug handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a gamecock perched on a branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few examples of Norton stoneware with incised decoration are known, this jar being the first Norton vessel that we have seen using this treatment to depict domesticated poultry. Significant restoration throughout. Both handles restored. Filled section to bird's breast. Rim chips. H 10".
