Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Starburst Decoration, Stamped "H.M. WHITMAN. / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1860-1862, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a star composed of six pointed rays surrounding a central flower blossom. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Light staining. A 5 1/2" crack from rim on front. An 8 1/2" Y-shaped crack descending from shoulder on reverse. A 4 1/2" crack on underside, extending onto base on front. A 1 1/8" base chip on reverse. A small in-the-firing base chip on reverse. H 12 1/4".
