One-Gallon Iron-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to John Swann, Alexandria, VA, circa 1815, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied tab handles, the upper body decorated with a dipped iron-oxide wash and covered in a salt glaze. Provenance: The Estate of Susan H. Myers, author of Handcraft to Industry and former Smithsonian Curator of Ceramics and Glass. One side with an in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder and small piece of adhered clay below. Two in-the-firing chips to one handle and a small, likely post-firing chip to same handle. A few minor rim chips. H 10".
