Rare Stoneware Snuff Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "MADE / BY. J. HOSLER," probably OH, late 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with two brushed flowers above the large incised signature, "MADE / BY. J. HOSLER." While "J. Hosler" cannot be positively identified, a John Hosler appears in the 1930 census as a laborer in a Toledo pottery factory. This John Hosler appears to have been too young to have made this jar, as he was born in January 1881. His father, also John Hosler, never appears as a potter in any records we have discovered, but he settled in Wood County, Ohio by the mid 1880's and it is possible that he was responsible for making this jar. Excellent condition with minor chipping to interior of rim, some spalling to cobalt, and minor staining. H 9".
