Fine and Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Decoration of a Man's Profile, Northeastern U.S. origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and elaborately-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a man's head in profile view including large elliptical eye, eyebrow, and hair. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The size of this incised profile design is noteworthy, measuring approximately 7 1/2" x 5 3/4", making it among the largest incised portraits that we have seen in American stoneware. A wonderful image with strong folk art appeal. Missing bottom two-thirds of handle. A large tight U-shaped crack extending from front to right side of jug. Lesser, in-the-firing flaws, including a faint 3 1/2" line to shoulder, a faint 2 1/2" in-the-firing spider line to base, a 1 3/8" in-the-firing contact mark to side of jug. A few minor base nicks. H 15".
