Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Freehand Decoration, Dated 1867, attributed to A.P. Donaghho, Fredericktown, PA, 1867, semi-ovoid jar with tooled accents, semi-rounded rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front with freehand stripes and dashes surrounding the number "4" within a wavy cartouche and the large date "1867". Further decorated below the rim with inverted swag motifs. Handle terminals decorated with stylized brushwork resembling flower blossoms. A fine example from this prolific potter's early years of stoneware production. Heavy chipping to interior of rim. A 1 1/2" loss to right handle. A minor chip to left handle. Network of cracks to reverse/left side of jar, extending onto underside, one of which additionally extends onto the base of the jar on the right side. An approximately 2 3/4" x 2 1/4" H-shaped hairline to front to right of freehand cartouche, not visible on interior. Some in-the-firing slumping to rim.
