Extremely Rare and Important Stoneware Oyster Jar, Stamped "THOMAS,M,JACKSON / 47,HOWARD,ST / NEW YORK," probably Brooklyn, NY origin, circa 1830's, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and narrow mouth, impressed with advertising for the African-American oysterman, Thomas Jackson. Surface covered in a metallic Albany slip over a reddish ground. Jackson, like Thomas Downing, was a prominent African-American restaurateur, well-regarded and known throughout New York City. The only oyster jar bearing this stamp that we have seen. One chip to side of rim, a small in-the-firing contact mark to right side of jar, and some other minor wear. H 7".
