One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Political Jug, Inscribed "John Hay / N.Y.", New York State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tall spout, featuring the slip-trailed cobalt inscription, "John Hay / N.Y.". John Milton Hay (1838-1905) served as secretary, emissary, and close associate of President Lincoln during the Civil War, and was present at his death after being shot at Ford's Theater. He later became Secretary of State under McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Serving as a diplomat, he was involved in the creation of over fifty treaties. A horizontal line on underside of handle. A minor in-the-firing ping with a short X-shaped line extending through it. Two tiny in-the-firing nicks to top of spout.
