One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & Co.", Incised "M" on Underside, Benedict C. Milburn at Hugh and Hugh Charles Smith's Wilkes Street Pottery, Alexandria, VA, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a stylized design of a sunflower with leaves emanating from the blossom. Reverse decorated with a simple floral motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Underside incised with the letter, "M", indicating a young Benedict C. Milburn as its maker. Stained spider lines and crazing throughout. Otherwise excellent condition.
