Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Abstract Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with footed base, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an elaborate slip-trailed flowering plant motif including brushed leaves. An additional version of this design appears under one handle and a flowering vine motif appears under the opposite handle. The quality of the cobalt slip itself, among the best that we have seen on a piece of Baltimore stoneware, the unusually-large width of the quill employed to apply it, and the size and free-flowing nature of the design, make this jar an important example of early Baltimore stoneware. A 2" chip to rim and a tiny rim nick. A 1 1/4" piece of adhered clay to body of jar. A shallow 1"chip on underside, adjacent to a 1" chip at base. A V-shaped line on underside, continuing a short distance onto base. A chip to handle.
