Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Mother and Baby Bird Decoration, Stamped "N. WHITE & CO. / BINGHAMTON", NY State origin, circa 1866-1868, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large, crested "mother" bird perched on a scroll-leaved vine with smaller "baby" bird design at the vine's end. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some oversalting to left side of jar's front and wear along left edge of decoration, both of which occurred in the firing. A faint 1 3/4" line from rim on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1 3/8" rim chip above left handle.
