Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Decoration of a Man's Bust, Northeastern U.S. origin, probably CT, circa 1820, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised design of a man's bust with nicely-executed hair. Interior coated in brown slip. Exterior with an appealing brown slip run down right side, created when the slip was poured out of the jug during manufacture. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a recently-surfaced GA collection. A 2 1/2" x 1" chip to underside at edge. A few shallow chips to bottom edge, one including a 5/8" horizontal line extending from it. A 2 1/4" X-shaped line on reverse, emanating from a surface chip. A tiny chip to spout. A tiny chip to handle. A 1 1/2" salt drip to left side of jug. H 10".
