Rare Six-Quart Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "BELMONT AVE. / POTTERY.", Newark, NJ, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A difficult-to-find NJ maker's mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. In-the-firing and post-firing discoloration/staining to surface, primarily on reverse. A shallow chip to one handle. A series of very minor, in-the-firing chips to underside at edge.
