Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, circa 1775, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled, wide-mouthed spout, the shoulder decorated with a slip-trailed watch spring motif with scalloped embellishments. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A thin 3" crack on underside, which continues several inches up reverse side of jug. A thin horizontal line to shoulder. Additional crazing throughout surface, probably in-the-firing.
