Rare and Fine George Ohr Pottery Inkwell with Federal Shield and Heart Motifs, Stamped "GEO E OHR / BILOXI MISS", circa 1895-1900, green-glazed inkwell with crumpled and dimpled form, seated atop a blue-glazed, slab base with coggled edge, featuring rare incised designs of a Federal shield with impressed stars, a heart flanked by impressed stars, and a ribbon. An outstanding example of Ohr's creative genius, combining his distinctive, contorted vessel style with outstanding incised decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor from Jim Carpenter at his shop in Montague, NJ in the 1970s. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 5/8" partially glazed-over, in-the-firing line on front, visible as a 3" line on reverse. Additionally, some extremely minor wear to edge of base as well as two small pieces of adhered clay on reverse, one partially covering maker's mark. L 6 3/8" ; W 5 1/2".
