Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Poultry Fountain with Cobalt Decoration, Philadelphia, PA origin, circa 1880, bee-hive form with stepped finial, applied lug handles, and hooded watering trough in front; decorated with light cobalt foliate motifs on the front and reverse, cobalt highlights to the handle terminals, and a curving line of cobalt underneath each handle. This fountain, with impressed three-gallon capacity mark below finial, is the largest salt-glazed stoneware poultry fountain we have seen. Its monumental size suggests it was used to water a large brood of chickens or larger-sized fowl, such as turkeys. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in 1974. Thin cracks in underside, one of which extends to shoulder on reverse. Additional tight cracks throughout shoulder area, one of which extends partway down edge of watering trough. Chips to opening. Two finial chips. H 16 1/4".
