Unusual Cold-Painted Stoneware Face Cup, 19th century, wheel-thrown cup with footed base and applied face displaying African features. Incised details to eyes, nostrils, and mouth. A study of the interior of the vessel reveals that its wall was pushed outward while in a pliable state to aid in the formation of the raised cheeks and chin of the figure. Composed of reddish, high-fired stoneware clay with gritty composition, the surface covered with old varnish or reddish-brown paint. Wear and roughness to rim and facial features. Two small rim chips. H 6".
