Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.", circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. A 3" x 1 1/4" partially-filled loss to rim on left side of churn with a 3 3/4" hairline descending from it. Three chips to one handle and a shallow 7/8" chip to opposite handle. A 2" chipped section to rim on reverse. Two other rim chips. Wear to inner rim where a lid would rest. Circular area of wear to interior base. A 3 1/4" faint X-shaped line on left side of churn.
