Glazed Redware Spaniel Bank with Brown-Slip Star Motif, attributed to George Wagner, Lehighton, Carbon Co., PA, fourth quarter 19th century, molded figure of a seated spaniel with applied coleslaw mane, incised details to muzzle, and coin slot in underside. Front of spaniel decorated with a brushed brown-slip star. Streaked highlights of copper and manganese throughout face and body. Surface covered in a heavy lead glaze. Yellow cold-painted highlights applied to the eyes. This bank is the first Wagner example we have seen with an intentional slip design other than spots applied to the figure. Very nice condition with some typical wear to coleslaw, wear to area of mouth, some tight cracks (presumably in-the-firing) emanating from the slot on underside, and a flake to bottom edge. H 6 3/4".
