Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, attributed to Abraham Mead, Greenwich, CT, late 18th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with slip-trailed watchspring motifs featuring heart-shaped embellishments to the top of the design and fish scale motifs below. Additional watchspring motifs emanating from the handle terminals. Slip-trailed "2" under each handle. Excellent form, maker, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago; previously purchased directly from the Mead family. Very nice overall condition. A 2" T-shaped hairline at base continuing onto underside. A 2 1/4" horizontal surface line at base, not visible on interior, connecting to a 1" flake near edge on underside. A 1 1/4" line in glaze at base, not visible on interior. Base chips, one of which is glazed over. A glazed-over ping to rim. H 10 1/4".
