Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Shield Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA", circa 1875, tapered jar with wax sealer rim, decorated with a large stenciled shield surrounding James Hamilton maker's stenciling, along with freehand stripes to the shoulder and base. A 1 1/2" smooth rim chip, possibly in-the-firing. A small chip on interior of rim. Two small nicks to inner wax sealer rim. A 4 1/4" x 1 1/4" area of surface abrasion to reverse. Other lesser surface wear and two brown stains to surface. H 9 1/2".
