Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, probably Manhattan, NY, late 18th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a finely-incised and cobalt-highlighted floral design featuring a central, hollow-centered blossom flanked by splayed leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One handle restored. Two sealed cracks in opposite handle. An adhered piece of clay and surface flake to one side. A filled and colored 1 1/2" surface flake to reverse, probably an in-the-firing flaw. Base broken and reglued, including several reglued pieces in underside. A 3 1/2" crack from rim. A 1 1/2" crack from rim on side of jar, including a sliver missing from surface at upper handle terminal. A 2 1/4" restored chip on rim. A small in-the-firing chip to interior of rim.
