Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1868 Date, Stamped "BROWN. BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON. LI", New York State origin, circa 1863-1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of two tulips intersected the large date "1868". Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few dated examples of Brown Brothers stoneware are known. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. A restored top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse. A faint 3 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. A restored 7" crack from rim on left side of crock's front, connecting to a 4" horizontal crack at base, with light touch-up to the number "1" in the date. An iron ping to bottom edge of left side of crock. An approximately 2 3/4" spider line to right side of crock's front.
