Very Rare Petroleum Centre, PA Stoneware Advertising Jug, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout and open strap handles, featuring the stenciled cobalt inscription "From / OWEN GAFFNEY / Wholesale / LIQUOR DEALER / PETROLEUM CENTRE, Pa.". Decorated above with freehand vining and graduated wavy stripes. Base with freehand number 4, flanked by dashes and underscored by a cobalt stripe. Cobalt highlights to lower handle terminals. Highly unusual advertising with particularly crisp stenciling. One handle restored. Some restoration to spout. An in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder. H 18 1/2".
