Four-Gallon New York City Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1880, large-sized, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with fan-shaped tail, perched on a leafy stem. Impressed above with the cobalt-highlighted advertising "JAMES HETHERINGTON / 398 GREENWICH ST / NEW YORK". Bottom of jug is rounded, which keeps the jug from sitting flat. An in-the-firing 1/2" chip / contact mark to right side of jug. An in-the-firing contact mark to the letter "K" in "NEW YORK". H 17 3/4".
