Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Apothecary Jug with Impressed Mortar and Pestle Motif, Stamped "JACOB CAIRE / POKEEPSIE NY", circa 1845, squat-shaped jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with two impressed designs of a mortar and pestle incorporating a leaf motif. Cobalt highlights to impressed decoration and maker's mark. This jug is the first of its type we have seen. Provenance: Included in the first stoneware exhibit held at the Museum of American Folk Art in Manhattan, NY, April 18 - June 2, 1974, listed as #22 in the exhibit catalog. A large Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing in a jagged pattern 7 3/4" up front. Flakes to underside. A 2" salt drip to reverse.
