Very Rare Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration and Blue and Green Slip Highlights, Manhattan, NY origin, fourth quarter 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering plant. Decoration includes highly-unusual greenish slip applied to the overlapping sections of the flower petals. Heavy incised slashes throughout petals and leaves. Greenish slip highlights to handle terminals. Desirable, early form with strong decoration. A 3 1/2" long in-the-firing contact mark to one side. A 3 1/2" piece of adhered clay to opposite side. Base chips, including a 1 1/4" glazed-over base chip. A thin surface crack around base with short lines extending off from it, not visible on interior. An approximately 3 1/2" X-shaped surface line to side of jar, not visible on interior.
