Lot of Five Redware Battle of Gettysburg Souvenir Miniatures, attributed to Henry and Charles Speese, Gettysburg, PA, circa 1885, group of molded Civil War souvenirs, including a Jennie Wade canteen with applied image and rope handle, a second canteen, a bullet with red ribbon, a musket ball, and a miniature jug. Canteens and bullets include impressed inscriptions related to the Battle of Gettysburg. Made by Henry Speese or his son, Charles, from clay dug at the Gettysburg Battlefield, these miniatures were described in the pottery's advertisements in the following manner: "made from material taken from the most historical portions of the field, they are themselves relics" (Lasansky, Central Pennsylvania Redware Pottery 1780-1904, p. 18). Included in a small display case. Provenance: Purchased in the 1970s from a direct descendant of the Speese family by the consignor's mother. All in excellent condition.
