Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Signed in Cobalt "P H Smith," Summit County, OH origin, mid 19th century, cylindrical jug with wide spout, decorated with a slip-trailed foliate design featuring crossed leaves with spots. Inscribed below the cobalt signature "P H Smith" underscored by wavy lines and spots. Slip-trailed and underscored "4" below spout. This is only the second example of Smith’s work we have seen signed in this manner, the others all being stamped maker’s marks. 5 1/2" line from spout on front. 5" line from spout on reverse. Some additional lines to body, primarily at base. Some fry to cobalt. A shallow 1" chip to top of spout and another small spout chip.
