Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, featuring a boldly-slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump. This design was executed with a slip cup that had a wider-than-usual opening, creating a particularly striking design. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A strongly-decorated example of a desirable Norton design. Large area of restoration on left side of jug extending 4 1/2" up from base, continuing several inches along base onto front. None of this restoration includes the decoration. 8" vertical crack on right side of decoration. Spout with minor nick and horizontal 3/8" line. Two short, minor in-the-firing lines at base. Some exfoliation to underside.
