Possibly Unique Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Folk Art Cobalt Decoration of a Hand, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS," New York State origin, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly-brushed design of a large hand inscribed "2" at the center. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and maker's mark. A visually-striking design, executed with bright cobalt slip against a light gray background. A particularly fine example of early Lyons or Clark family stoneware. Small chip on top of rim. Narrow, 1" sliver-shaped chip on interior rim, which appears to be in-the-firing. Minor 3/8" surface line at end of one handle, possibly in-the-firing. Base chip.
