Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1850, keg-form cooler with raised banding, applied lug handles, and semi-squared bung hole, the front decorated with a large tulip plant design bearing three blossoms. Cobalt highlight around bung hole. Excellent form and decoration. Provenance: Robert Hunter, Yorktown, VA. Thin 4 1/2" crack continuing 5 1/4" onto underside. Faint surface line to right of bung hole, also running halfway across top of bung hole, not visible on interior and likely in-the-firing. Tight vertical 1 1/2" surface line under bung hole, extending 3/4" onto underside, not visible on interior. 1 3/4" vertical surface line at base on reverse, continuing 3/4" onto underside, not visible on interior. 3" hairline from rim and 1/2" hairline from rim. Tiny chips to rim.
