Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistically slip-trailed design of a spotted deer reclining atop a hill, flanked by a fence and a bush. Additional fence in foreground. Background with fence and tree. Excellent color. A particularly large and well-detailed example of this desirable Norton design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Georgia, covered with paint. Significant exfoliation to surface. Two 2" flakes on reverse. Small chips to interior of rim. Heavy wear and chipping to ledge on interior of rim, where a lid would rest. Small chips to end of one handle. Large crack under one handle with thinner cracks extending off of it. This crack also extends onto underside, where it forms a Y. 4" X-shaped hairline on reverse. H 14 1/2".
