Extremely Rare Diminutive Shaker Stoneware Jar, Stamped "UNITED BRETHREN / NEW LEBANON," New York State origin, circa 1830, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and inward curving rim, the surface covered in a salt glaze over a brownish slip. Front bears the extremely rare impressed inscription "UNITED BRETHREN / NEW LEBANON". Possibly the only example of stoneware made for the Shaker community in existence. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Maine collection assembled during the 1980s; Purchased in 1986 from Rich Rosso, a prominent dealer in Shaker items. Heavy chipping to base, which appears to have occurred in-the-firing. H 3 3/8".
