Rare Presentation Rockingham Shaving Mug, Northeastern U.S. origin, possibly CT., mid 19th century, with attached cup and small applied handle at base, the front decorated with a molded bust of a hatted man, the surface covered in a honey-colored Rockingham glaze. Interior with Albany slip glaze. Incised on reverse with the rare inscription "Compliments of Conn's (?)." When this mug sold as part of Hodtson Collection at Sotheby's Parke Bernet in 1974, it was catalog as being inscribed "Comforthers / Conn't." However, we believe this inscription is incorrect. Unusual form and highly unusual inscription. Provenance: The Important Ceramics Collection of Jacqueline Hodtson, Sotheby's Parke Bernet, January 22, 1974. 2" hairline from rim. Rim chip. In-the-firing flakes to underside. H 4".
