Outstanding and Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Cooler with Incised Pheasant Decoration and the Inscription "RUM*," New York State origin, possibly Albany area, first quarter 19th century, highly ovoid jug-form cooler with open ribbed handles and circular bung hole, decorated with an incised pheasant with turned head and incised detail to neck, wing, and breast, perched on a leaf. Above the pheasant, the incised inscription "RUM*" in bold letters with incised slashes. Additional cobalt brushed at the lower ends of the handles. Reverse incised "H" or "T C" and "x." Beverage coolers of this period in American stoneware production are seldom offered for sale. 19th century lead repair to underside. Chip to bung hole. H 16 1/2".
