Exceptional Yale University Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Mug, Incised on Underside "JMD / MAY 21, 1894 / NEW HAVEN, CONN," circa 1894, wheel-thrown cylindrical form with rounded shoulder and base moldings, incised across the front "YALE ‘94" along with a cobalt-highlighted Yale insignia. Impressed with a serious of dancing students in graduation apparel across the shoulder. Surface further incised with the following inscriptions: "The saddest tale we have to tell Is when we bid old yale farewell; Bright College years with pleasure rife The shortest gladdest years of life; Time and change shall nought avail To break the friendships formed at yale". One of the finest Yale mugs we have seen. As-made condition with an in-the-firing base chip. H 6 3/8" ; Diameter (at base) 5".
