Very Rare Salt-Glazed Tennessee Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Wash, Stamped "SMITH. JR," Samuel Smith, Jr., Knoxville, TN, circa 1810, tall, ovoid jar with applied pocket handles, rounded rim, and inner ledge on interior of rim to allow for a lid or dasher guide. Impressed "SMITH. JR" under one handle. Surface covered in a dipped, reddish-brown iron slip with overlying salt glaze. An important, extremely early example of Southern stoneware. J-shaped crack from rim, extending approximately 5 1/2" down from rim. Chips on inner lid ledge. H 16".
