Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grape Vine Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, straight-sided jar with tapering shoulder and applied handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of eight grapes, three groups of leaves, and four corkscrewing tendrils, extending from a grape vine. A desirable decoration by this maker. Includes lid (possibly not original). Jar with a faint X-shaped line on underside, which is not visible on interior. Also a 3" line from rim on front, and a base chip on reverse. Lid with chips. H (including lid) 13 3/4".
