Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Charger with Relief Coat of Arms, Inscribed "Pennypacker= Philadelphia 1898," attributed to the Wingender Pottery, Haddonfield, NJ, 1898, decorated with coggled oval, spade, and heart motifs, featuring a relief design of a coat of arms with knight's helmet and shield, impressed "Pannebakker=s'Hertogenbosch / 1674" and "Pennypacker- Philadelphia 1898." Born in 1674, Hendrick Pannebakker emigrated from Germany to Philadelphia in 1698, this charger not only referencing him in its inscriptions, but displaying his family's coat of arms. ("s'Hertogenbosch" refers to the Dutch town from which Pannebakker's ancestors had emigrated to Germany.) It was clearly made as a bicentennial commemoration of Pannebakker's arrival in America for one of his many descendants, or perhaps for a formal celebration held that year. Cobalt highlights throughout and purplish slip highlight to relief plaque above knight's helmet. Salt-glazed surface. An exceedingly rare form in 19th century American stoneware and the only Wingender example of its kind that we have seen. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 1/8" in-the-firing edge chip. Diam. 16".
