Rare Lidded Stoneware Tobacco Jar with Elaborate Carved Decoration and Inscriptions, Yale University, Dated "Feb. 10th 1896," cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, the surface covered in Albany slip and decorated with crossed pipes inscribed "YALE 9Y6," a cigar, and a cigarette. Surface incised with elaborate inscriptions, "BUT . I . IN . MY. / my GRIEFS FORGET / IN DREAMS OF MAIDS AFAR," "or Some / the poetry praised," and "Some may prefer / a [above a cigarette]." A diagonal plaque on the side of the jar reads, "Mr Wm Ansel Arnold. / Willomant(?) CA. / 812 Main St." Rim incised " 'All . they . that . Love . not . tobacco . and . women . are . Fools' ." Original, slightly-domed lid reads, " 'INFINITE . RICHES . IN . A . LITTLE . ROOM' Marlowe," along with the raised inscription, "YALE / 96." Finial incised "Smoke a Dram of." A wonderfully-inscribed work, significantly rarer than the "Yale mugs" produced during the same period. Jar with large reglued section and some small filled sections. Wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with a small chip to underside of edge and light edge wear. A wheel-thrown opening on the center of the underside includes in-the-making chipping. H (including lid) 6 3/8".
