Spring 2026 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 25

Estimate: $2,000-$4,000. About Estimates   About Shipping

Minimum Bid: $500.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. The price ranges for each lot are considered conservative in value, and are listed as a courtesy to our bidders to give them an idea of how much they may be expected to pay to win the item. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.

Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAW.S / STONEWARE," Thomas Commeraw, Coerlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, circa 1815, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flaring collar, and open loop handles. Impressed on the front and reverse with the cobalt-highlighted words, "COMMERAW.S" and "STONEWARE" below an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Found in a home in the Creeds area of Virginia Beach, Princess Anne County, Virginia. The elderly woman who previously owned it was 87 years old in 2025. A photo found inside the crock (not included with this lot) reads, "Great Grandfather Found this on Abanted [Abandoned] Ship." Based on the woman's age, this jar was apparently found on a ship in the 19th century. A 2 1/2" Y-shaped line on underside, with part of the Y extending 3 1/2" diagonally onto base, and the other part extending 3 1/8" vertically up base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 12 3/8" ; Diam. (at rim) 9 7/8".
