Spring 2026 Stoneware Auction

Lot #: 160

Estimate: $400-$600. About Estimates   About Shipping

Minimum Bid: $75.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. The price ranges for each lot are considered conservative in value, and are listed as a courtesy to our bidders to give them an idea of how much they may be expected to pay to win the item. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.

Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Fine Five-Gallon Cobalt-Stenciled Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "LIPSCOMB & SOMERVILLE / STAUNTON. VA.," attributed to A.P. Donaghho, Parkersburg, WV, circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, featuring stenciled geometric banding at the midsection, a stenciled "5" within geometric border above, and the stenciled merchant advertising, "LIPSCOMB & SOMERVILLE / STAUNTON. VA." at the base. Note that the stenciled capacity and advertising are applied in an unusual darker cobalt than the decoration. Among the largest and most heavily-decorated examples of Staunton advertising stoneware that we have seen. An 8 1/2" crack from rim on left side of jar's front. A thin 6" crack from rim on interior reverse side, partially visible on exterior, where it includes a small chip to shoulder molding. A short surface crack to rim on left side of jar, not visible on interior. A small chip to interior of rim and a minor in-the-firing chip to top of rim. Chips to proper left handle. Surface with staining and light wear. H 15 7/8".
