Rare Open-Handled Redware Jar, Greene County, TN origin, early to mid 19th century, finely-potted, highly-ovoid jar with tall, flaring collar, angular rim, and heavily-ribbed strap handles. Jar appears to have been made without a glaze, or at most a very sparse glaze. Surface covered in traces old brown paint. Wahler affectionately called this jar "My precious 'Mackie'." Beautiful form. Provenance: Wahler states the following in her notes about the discovery of this jar: "Bought this jar and small one I call 'Peewee' from the same family. They had been miller's in the Horse Creek area of Greene County. One of my very favorite pieces. It was sitting on a brick hearth in a nondescript brick rancher. I almost fainted. . . Related both to Peter Harmon and Click families." A wide, sealed Y-shaped crack in underside. A long, thin horizontal crack at base, partially visible on interior. A few old chips to interior of rim, which were formed before the jar was painted. H 13 1/4".
