Glazed Redware Jar with Incised Sine Wave Decoration, Inscribed "32," probably Carter County, TN, circa 1840-1880, ovoid jar with angled rim molding, the shoulder embellished with three straight incised lines flanked by two wavy lines, the surface covered in a mottled reddish lead-and-manganese glaze. Incised "32" at shoulder. Literature: For two related jars, see Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 36, fig. 24 and p. 37, fig. 25, also p. 192, figs. 24 and 25. Wear to rim and shallow chipping to interior of rim. Wear and shallow chipping around inner rim for lid. Some surface wear. A shallow 1 1/2" base flake and some smaller surface flakes to base. A few additional small base chips. Heavy exfoliation to underside and interior base. H 8".
