Glazed Open-Handled Redware Jar, attributed to the Mottern Pottery, Carter County, TN, circa 1820-1840, ovoid jar with footed base, flared rim, and deeply-ribbed vertical handle, coated in a partially-dipped lead glaze with bright-orange coloration to surface. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler in 2006 at Case Antiques, Inc. Auctions & Appraisals, Knoxville, TN. In her notes, Wahler states, "I think this is one of the earliest Mottern's which would likely me[an] John made it. Found in Bluff City. This is the only zone glazed piece of TN pottery documented." A 2 3/4" loss to rim on one side. Additional shallow chipping and wear to rim. Chips and wear to handles. A 2 3/4" crack from rim. A faint, approximately 1" line in rim. Base chips. A thin 1 1/2" crack in underside, continuing approximately 5" up body of jar. H 11 3/4".
