Scarce Miniature Glazed Redware Jar, probably Greene County, TN, circa 1840-1880, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, tall collar with flattened rim, and open strap handles with depressed terminals. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze over an olive ground with orange spotting. Exceptional size. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Large loss to one handle. An approximately 4 1/2" sealed curving crack from rim above the loss to the handle. An approximately 2 1/8" x 2 1/4" triangular crack from rim, part of which goes into one handle. A 2 1/2" thin horizontal crack extends off from this crack. While crack is glued, there doesn't appear to be any pieces that were broken out of the jar and reattached. Some light surface wear. Wear to interior of rim. A minor in-the-firing contact mark at base. H 4".
